Family History Helpdesk

The Family History Helpdesk is back!

Join us on the first and third Thursday mornings of the month between 10am and 12 noon, when Dave Mount from the East Yorkshire Family History Society will be on hand to assist you with your family history research.

There is no need to book but consultations are on a first come-first served basis, so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. Each consultation lasts up to 30 minutes, and our experienced volunteers will gladly assist you with using websites such as Ancestry and Find My Past, as well as offering guidance with any further resources which may be of use to your research.

Their advice is not limited to Hull and the surrounding area.

Read our guide Tips for Beginners: Tracing your family tree in Hull which includes information about how to get started and key sources held at the History Centre.

Bring any relevant information you have along to the session with you. It does not necessarily have to be the original documents, but make a note of birth dates and places along with parents' names, for example.

Having the information written down gives a good start to record keeping, which is essential.

Concentrate on researching only one side of family at a time to avoid confusion.

Make sure you notify staff of your arrival so they can put you on the list of people to be seen.
