Doodles and Drawings: Art in the Archives

This exhibition took place in the past. Want to know what's on now? Head to Current Events!

Archives...what does that word mean to you?

Does it conjure up visions of boring dusty documents and illegible text? Think again!

Following on from the Cabinet of Curiosities exhibition at Hull's Maritime Museum, Hull History Centre has created an exhibition, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will challenge your view of archives by showcasing some of the wonderful doodles and drawings to be found within its collections.

Through beautiful sketches, watercolours, drawings and doodles you will see that archives are not all text and that images can add as much to our understanding of the past as the written word. The items within the exhibition span the 14th through to the 21st centuries and include artwork created by volunteers who have taken inspiration from the collections at the History Centre.

Come along and see art in all its many guises, from medieval doodles through to modern day sketches, and engage with interactives which will help demystify the work carried out at the Centre to manage and preserve the City's heritage.

Amongst the gems in the exhibition see if you can spot our oldest doodle, Ranulph the rabbit. You’re bound to spot him. At just under 600 years old he can’t move very fast!

The exhibition has a supporting programme of events and activities.
