2013 Closure - Report

9th December 2013

Library material:
Work has begun to catalogue the library's illustration collection - work on this will continue and a source guide created once it is complete. A colleague from the university has been working on the local studies material and he has written a blog piece

City Archives:
volumes being movedThe microfilms of the Shipping Registers were returned and staff have labelled the microfilm boxes and placed them in the cabinets. Other material on microfilm including Bench books ( U BRG) and items from Fish Street Congregational Church (L DCFS) have been added to the microfilm cabinets and the online catalogues updated. Moved over 1500 volumes of material that has been microfilmed including newspapers and the above mentioned shipping registers. Over 500 magistrate court volumes and 100 boxes (C DPM) were moved - this allows us to make other collections easier to produce when requested.

University Archives:
repacking materialJust before closure a large lorry with over 3000 archive boxes was delivered and one of the main tasks on the university collections has been to re-pack archives into modern acid-free boxes. Two of our large collections - Papers of the Forbes Adam/Thompson/Lawley (Barons Wenlock) Family of Escrick (Ref U DDFA) and the archives of Ellerman's Wilson Line (Ref U DEW) have been reboxed with hundreds of old boxes recycled. We also took the opportunity to move a few collections around to make it easier for staff to locate requested items.

We also completed the catalogue for the papers of George de Boer and a source guide about this fascinating collection relating to the history and evolution of Spurn Point is now available

Each year in closure week the building gets a deep clean, the carpets in the public area get washed and the xmas tree is put-up in the arcade.

Staff also worked on their presentations for next weeks lunchtime club and the programme (PDF) for talks in 2014 was finalised.
