City Architects Housing Department

Collection Reference: C TAY

Covering Dates:  c.1880-1984

Description of the Records:
The collection contains files of papers relating to housing schemes and building projects undertaken by the Housing Section of the City Architects Department. The files include specifications, estimates, tenders, correspondence, work orders, plans and drawings, lists of property defects, sampled financial accounts, site meeting minutes, sectional completion certificates and photographs. The files give information about particular housing schemes. This includes property names and addresses, number of dwellings and area covered, name of contractor, materials used, estimates and costing for work, and details about the specifications for the scheme.

Searching the Collection:
You can search the collection using our online catalogue. You can also use the paper catalogue in our search room to browse the collection. Please note that the files relate to a particular housing scheme rather than a specific property (e.g. Bilton Grange Estate) so you need to search using the housing scheme name.

How the collection can help your research:
You can use the records to undertake research into 20th century council housing schemes, including inter- and post-war housing. You can also use the records to study the processes of property construction, alterations, extensions, restoration, maintenance, costs (in some cases wages), and materials used in council building projects.
