About volunteering

What can I do?
Volunteer opportunities are available on both a short- and a long-term basis. The three main categories of volunteering opportunities that we can offer at the Hull History Centre are:

Visit these sections of the website to find out more about how to apply or register your interest. We will try to fulfil a volunteer’s interests as far as possible, but please be aware that in addition to a selection process, there may be times when high demand may mean that we are unable to find spaces for every applicant.

How do I get involved?
The Hull History Centre follows a recruitment process for new volunteers. Each potential volunteer should complete an application form, which can be found in the relevant categories on this website.

We will normally ask for at least one reference for you. This can be a reference from an employer, a previous volunteering role, or from someone who has known you for a long time who is not related to you. We might ask you to come for an interview, or for an informal meeting.

If you decide that you would like to volunteer with us, and we are happy to offer you a volunteering place, then we will arrange a start date, volunteering hours and draw up a volunteer agreement with you. The volunteer agreement is not a contract, and it can be ended at any time by you or by us.

What sort of people are we looking for?
We want to enable all sorts of people to become involved with our work in caring for, and making accessible, the historic collections in our care.

We are especially interested in volunteering applications from people with the following skills and attitudes:

  • Enthusiasm for history
  • The confidence to ask questions if you’re not sure about anything
  • The ability to listen to and follow instructions
  • Good concentration skills
  • Attention to detail
  • A sensible, responsible attitude

Neat handwriting and a willingness to do simple tasks on a computer would also be advantageous.

If you are volunteering on-site at the History Centre, we will pay travel expenses up to the value of a day’s bus pass within the Hull area, with proof of purchase.

If you are volunteering on-site, we will not cover lunch costs, as there is a kitchen in the building.

If you are volunteering off-site, reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be considered. Reimbursement will be dependent upon our financial resources and your production of receipts.
